Human Biofilm Susceptibility testing

In nature, bacteria exist in two forms; as free-floating (planktonic) organisms or as biofilms, which are communities of organisms. The National Institutes of Health reports that 80% of all infectious diseases are caused by organisms in a biofilm state and in this biofilm state, organisms can be up to 1000 times more resistant to antibiotics than conventional infections. These facts may not seem important until it is realized that current antibiotics were designed and approved to treat planktonic organisms not biofilm organisms, which are much more resistant.

Currently when doctors treat infections, they will do one of two things: prescribe a broad spectrum antibiotic immediately, or request a susceptibility test (MIC test or other). If a lung infection is involved, the doctor will ask the patient to spit into a container and then send the sample to a laboratory where the bacteria contained in the sample will be tested against antibiotics to determine which antibiotics will kill the bacteria. If a chronic biofilm infection is involved, current susceptibility testing designed for planktonic bacteria would therefore give the less reliable information likely resulting in a treatment failure, continued patient suffering, and increased healthcare costs as other alternatives are tried.

The InnovoSCEPT™ products therefore provide guidance to doctors for selection of antibiotics for all bacteria causing human infections.

  • bioFILM PA™*

Pseudomonas aeruginosa

*Pseudomonas bacteria are difficult to kill and cause most lung infections in persons with cystic fibrosis and in ventilator-associated pneumonia. Doctors will commonly prescribe two or more antibiotics to treat these infections. bioFILM PA™ provides doctors with guidance on selecting appropriate combinations, a benefit not found in any other susceptibility test.

All InnovoSCEPT™ tests are approved by Health Canada for medical diagnostic use and licensed for sale in Canada. In addition, bioFILM PA™ is approved by the Israeli Ministry of Health and licensed for sale in Israel.

Innovotech can provide in-house InnovoSCEPT™ and other biofilm bacterial susceptibility testing services for interested parties both within Canada and globally.

All in-house biofilm bacterial susceptibility testing and associated Information are to be used for research or informational purposes only and are not intended to be used for any medical, diagnostic, regulatory, or any other purposes whatsoever. The biofilm susceptibility tests and associated information are not approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration.
